What is the correct way to use these handles, palm up or palm down?

I opened up a 911 and the handles go upward, it’s as if you’re supposed to open the doors palm up which made me wonder if that is actually the “correct” way to use those handles. Like the old school top hinged handles on the Challenger.

It could also go up due to the height of the car in comparison to a person. On a car that low you pull more up than you do straight outward, and I could totally see Porsche designing a door handle to cater to that.

Well yeah, top hinged are always palm up (and my preferred handle design because flush to the body.) These grab handle style have always been palm down to me though.

This question bothers me a bit with the use of the word “correct.” If you had asked which is the preferred way, I’d have an answer but you are implying that there is a correct and incorrect way to use the handle. Maybe the designers intended for you to have a choice in how you want to open it.

If it’s a Toyota with smart key, palm down.

(That’s because the sensor is, AFAICT, basically at the top of the handle, not really the inside. So, AFAIK, coming at it palm up will result in slower activation of the hand sensor.)

In something else, probably doesn’t matter at all.

My car has handles just like this and I do palm down. But I also don’t “pull” on the handle. I rest my thumb where the key spot is and squeeze, sort of like if you are using plyers. My thumb will push against the keyhole and therefor my other four fingers will pull the handle just enough for it to open.

Either way, don’t use the hand that has the ring on it. My wife’s wedding ring scratches the hell out of the paint around the door handle. Yeah, I’ve tried talking to he about it, but it just doesn’t do any good.

I didn’t know palm up was a thing. That is a strange question. I would always open palm down. Every car that is a traditional actual pull handle.

From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t matter as long as you scratch the inner paint with your fingernails as much as you can
